Question regarding forks of Cube 2 and other things.
« on: May 02, 2017, 06:07:51 PM »
My friend and I wish to make a few maps for the game when we get the spare time, but we have a few questions. I'm not entirely sure where to put this, so I hope this place will do.

1. If we make a map on the 'main' version of Sauerbraten, will it be incompatible with other forks?
2. Are any forks of Sauerbraten more populated than than the primary version? If it's difficult or impossible to port maps between forks, we'd ideally like to make them for whatever is played the most.
3. We plan to, very far down the track, make a total conversion for Cube 2, or maybe even a standalone game. Are there any forks that would make this effort a bit smoother? We've been eyeing Inexor, but we're uncertain if it would be better to just use vanilla.

Thank you for your time, and I hope I put this in the right place.

If, by forks, you mean custom clients made for Sauerbraten, maps made in the original main version (not the SVN) can be played on certain custom clients like ComEd (this sites' version of Cube 2 Sauerbraten). There are some more custom clients out there, but right now I can't quite name them.

If you mean something else like Red Eclipse or Inexor, then officially... yeah, they will be incompatible. Those games uses a different process, map file and all. That, and they are not as popular as Sauerbraten. As a matter of fact, I can't think of any other cube 2 based game being more popular than Sauerbraten.

Now, making a total conversion for Cube 2? No fork will make anything smoother unless you understand the code behind it, although I believe Platinum Arts Sandbox attempted to do this.

Red Eclipse can run Sauerbraten maps.
I don't know about Inexor, but I suspect it can.
