Title: promotion
Post by: vzzec on September 04, 2014, 08:11:13 PM
Hey guys, i thought about it for a while and came to the conclusion that sauer could really need some kind of promotion to attract new (competitive) players, as the old ones become inactive (lost) or lack the time to play due to studying etc. Im not really sure how this can be done but maybe it would be good idea if some native english speaker would do a commentary of some great league games and upload them to yt (as the sauer trailers are rather poor imo). Demos should be available huh?
Please tell me if you like the idea and add some others

in my opinion if a tournament were hosted, the attraction of playing this game would rise not only for new players, but for the older ones as well.

100% agree. Without a tournament, there's no real motivation for practicing and getting good.

How would it help new players? I'd think they'd be very intimidated by all the good players playing and winning tournaments.

Of course, we do need some kind of tournament, and not this ladder shit. Something concrete on a scheduled date, like what DK did, but without eTeam :).

We need another swl-like tournament. When we played all games in one day, instead of over 2-3 weeks. Playing it in one day allows the community to be in the same place together. Maybe we can keep the server connect private so no one can ddos it.

tried that, doesn't work. *cough*

Furthermore, without a good anticheat client, it's not worth doin anything. wait for SDoS, and you shall be pleased. (no that's not pleasured)

I think that having a regular tournament again would promote players to continue playing and become more serious about the game. Nothing is a better motivator than having healthy competition. With that said, getting the word out to the world is probably just as important, if not more. There are soooo many games out there for youths and adults to play. Sauerbraten is practically unknown and primarily accessed by people looking for free games. Really, that's how I found it. But anyone reading this forum knows that when you get past the learning curve of how to aim your mouse, it's really more than just a free game. For many it's a way of life and it can become this for a very large number of people if they not only find the game, but are introduced to the community within. Questions is: what's the best way to do that?

i think you've been away a long time. the problem with tournaments is, that script kiddie scum is always go and flood the servers so that there is a denial of service (DoS). This makes hosting an event very much useless.
There are ways to go around this and we hope that in the future there will be a decent tournament again.

Until now, these fuckers pretty much destroyed the game for us. Sad but true. All because they aren't skilled to hack a closed source game, but still feel the urge to show off.

Furthermore, I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be an actual game download link from this site (or a link to sauerbraten.org). That might be helpful for people interested in downloading the game who stumble across this site first. I did notice that there is a link to this site from sauerbraten.org, which is great!

Also it might be beneficial to have this site display in google search queries. I know it takes time for the googlebot to fully index websites, but if it hasn't been done someone should at least register the site with google (http://www.google.com/submityourcontent/). There's also a way to add SEO capabilities to wordpress sites for better optimization.

I want to stress that I applaud all the work all you guys are doing for the game and this community. I really think that this website is a fantastic idea and can really become the front page for the sauer community. Because it is made up of not just one clan but a conglomeration of people working together, it shows real solidarity for the cause of which new players will take notice. Keep up the good work!    :)

Perhaps the tournament principe also matters the mapping community. So maybe a mapping challenge hosted from here boosts the spirit of Sauerbraten again.
I'm willing to start organising another one if there is enough commitment for it to participate.

P.S.
You don't need an anti cheat client for that =P.
